Sacroiliac joints are located symmetrically on both sides of the body. They appear where the sacrum meets the ilium, or in layman’s terms where the spine meets the hip bone. Steroid injeciton procedures into the joint can give great pain relief.

Just like all cartilage containing joint, the SI joint is prone to normal aging wear and tear arthritis. With arthritis can come pain.

Phoenix Pain management treatment options include pain medication, interventional pain management, chiropractic, and Phoenix physical therapy. The procedure is used to provide pain relief from arthritis in the SI joint with an injection into the area where the hip bone and spine meet. The steroid medication can reduce swelling and inflammation in the joint.

The patient lies face down and a cushion is placed under the stomach for comfort and to arch the back. The Scottsdale pain physician uses touch and the fluoroscope to find the sacroiliac joint. A local anesthetic numbs the skin and all the tissue down to the surface of the sacroiliac joint. The physician advances a needle through the anesthetized tract and into the sacroiliac joint. A steroid anesthetic mix is injected into the joint bathing the painful area in medication. The pain doctor removes the needle and a band aid is placed over the injection site.

Because the SI joint is irregular and jagged, be sure to locate a pain specialist who uses a fluoroscopy machine for needle placement, which is a form of real time x-ray. This provides the optimal chance for accurate injection placement. You do not want to receive a steroid injection with anything less than the optimal chance of success. It also may take numerous injections to receive the maximum benefit. The entrance to the joint is small,  yet the joint maintains a decent linear length. A few SI injections can be required to provide the desired pain relief.
